Analytical Modelling of Grounding Electrodes Transient Behavior

IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems / Technical Operations Committee, 1984
This paper presents the results of analytical and numerical investigations to evaluate the impulse performance of grounding electrodes. Practical grounding electrodes used-for the lightning protection of power and industrigl systems are analyzed through, a comprehensive computer program developed for this purpose.

Impulse performance of ground electrodes for increasing number of rod electrodes

open access: yes2020 IEEE International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Application (ICHVE), 2020
This paper presents experimental results of three electrode's configurations, 1-rod, 2-rod and 3-rod electrodes. A high impulse current generator is employed to inject different magnitudes of current into these rod electrodes. The effect of increasing number of rod electrodes on the voltage and current waveforms, time to peak current, discharge time ...

A Comparison of Concrete Encased Grounding Electrodes to Driven Ground Rods

IEEE Transactions on Industry and General Applications, 1970
An experimental study was made to compare the efficacy of concrete encased grounding electrodes to that of driven ground rods for grounding residential and small commercial electric services. This study extended over 14 months and included a very wet winter and a dry summer.

Impulse Behavior of Ground Electrodes

IEEE Power Engineering Review, 1983
The state of knowledge on the behavior of ground wire electrodes under impulse currents due to lightning strokes is outlined. The influence of ground characteristics, size of buried conductors, and current wave-shape and intensity are discussed.

Modelling of a Grounding Electrode

IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1973
An experimental modelling technique of a grounding electrode in non-homogenous soil is presented, and the experimental results obtained are compared with theoretical figures computed from known analytical methods.(1,2) This technique is suitable for dc or ac testing of a grounding electrode.

The response of grounding electrodes to lightning currents

open access: yes, 2009
Lightning is a frequent cause of failures and damages in power systems. In most situations, the severity of lightning effects is influenced by the response of the system grounding electrodes to lightning currents that is typically quite different from that presented to currents at power-system frequencies.

Lightning surge response of ground electrodes

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1989
Experimental and analytical evidence shows that lighning surge currents ionize the air in the soil. This ionization process tends to increase the contact area of the electrode with surrounding material. The larger area results in lower resistance and less voltage stress per unit current.

Corrosion assessment of a ground electrode in contact with ground enhancing compounds

2010 30th International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2010
Although a ground enhancing compound of a grounding system main purpose is to discharge electrical current to ground, however, it overlooks the fact that it can suffer chemical degradation due to the contact of the ground electrode with the compound, as the latter is not a chemically inert material.

Impulse characterization of ground electrodes

2014 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2014
In this paper, an analysis of the experimental results on the impulse behaviour of grounding electrodes is presented. The parameters used for analyzing transient performance are reviewed and differences highlighted based on test data. The analysis is extended to (i) quantify the effect of impulse shape, (ii) quantify the effect of electrode length ...

Analysis of the Ground Impedance of Ground Grids Combined with the Carbon Ground Electrodes

Journal of the Korean Institute of Illuminating and Electrical Installation Engineers, 2013
This paper deals with the frequency-dependent ground impedance of ground grids combined with the carbon ground electrodes. Ground grids are generally valid for multipurpose grounding systems as well as lightning protection systems. The carbon ground electrodes may be supplementarily used to reduce the high frequency ground impedance and to improve the ...
