From Ancient Techniques to Modern Solutions: In Situ Synthesis of C‐S‐H for Sandstone Conservation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Herein, this work presents a paleo‐inspired approach to synthesizing and optimizing C‐S‐H‐based grouting mortars for conserving the sandstone of Beishan Grottoes, Dazu Rock Carvings, China. By achieving an optimal recipe compatible with natural sandstone, this work demonstrates the pivotal role of hydrogen bonding in the adhesion between C‐S‐H mortars ...

One million year old groundwater in the Sahara revealed by krypton-81 and chlorine-36 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Measurements of 81Kr/Kr in deep groundwater from the Nubian Aquifer (Egypt) were performed by a new laser-based atom-counting method. 81Kr ages range from \~2x10^5 to ~1x10^6 yr, correlate with 36Cl/Cl ratios, and are consistent with lateral flow of groundwater from a recharge area near the Uweinat Uplift in SW Egypt.

Understanding the Efficacy of U-Net & Vision Transformer for Groundwater Numerical Modelling [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
This paper presents a comprehensive comparison of various machine learning models, namely U-Net, U-Net integrated with Vision Transformers (ViT), and Fourier Neural Operator (FNO), for time-dependent forward modelling in groundwater systems. Through testing on synthetic datasets, it is demonstrated that U-Net and U-Net + ViT models outperform FNO in ...

Electronic Nanomaterials for Plants: A Review on Current Advances and Future Prospects

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
Global food security faces mounting challenges from climate change and rapid population growth. This review highlights the pivotal role of electronic nanomaterials–including metals, metal oxides, and carbon‐based structures–in enhancing plant photosynthesis, nutrient uptake, and stress resilience. Furthermore, it explores how emerging platforms such as

Groundwater pumping to increase food production causes persistent groundwater drought in India [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Rapid groundwater depletion in India is a sustainability challenge. However, the crucial role of climate and groundwater pumping on persisting groundwater drought remains unrecognized. Using the data from Gravity recovery climate experiment (GRACE) satellites and more than 5000 observational wells, here we show that the increase in precipitation in ...

Impacts of geopolitics and policy on Latin American biodiversity and water resources

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
Abstract Latin America is a major agricultural producer with important natural resources. Efforts have been made to protect sensitive areas but are hindered by agricultural trade disruptions outside the control of individual countries due to globally integrated crop markets.

Numerical Modeling of Gas Migration and Hydrate Formation in Heterogeneous Marine Sediments

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2019
The formation of marine gas hydrates is controlled by gas migration and accumulation from lower sediments and by the conditions of the hydrate stability zone.

Surrogate Optimization of Deep Neural Networks for Groundwater Predictions [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Sustainable management of groundwater resources under changing climatic conditions require an application of reliable and accurate predictions of groundwater levels. Mechanistic multi-scale, multi-physics simulation models are often too hard to use for this purpose, especially for groundwater managers who do not have access to the complex compute ...

SARGDV: Efficient identification of groundwater-dependent vegetation using synthetic aperture radar [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Groundwater depletion impacts the sustainability of numerous groundwater-dependent vegetation (GDV) globally, placing significant stress on their capacity to provide environmental and ecological support for flora, fauna, and anthropic benefits. Industries such as mining, agriculture, and plantations are heavily reliant on groundwater, the over ...
