Disordered but rhythmic—the role of intrinsic protein disorder in eukaryotic circadian timing

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Unstructured domains known as intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) are present in nearly every part of the eukaryotic core circadian oscillator. IDRs enable many diverse inter‐ and intramolecular interactions that support clock function. IDR conformations are highly tunable by post‐translational modifications and environmental conditions, which ...

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Responses of a large herbivore to predation risk are modulated by intrinsic and extrinsic factors

open access: yesEcosphere
Prey species can perceive and respond to spatiotemporal variation in predation risk to increase survival. In addition to adjusting spatial and temporal activity patterns to avoid predation, prey employ other antipredator behaviors, such as vigilance and ...

Braid Groups are Linear Groups

open access: yesAdvances in Mathematics, 1996
Let \(B_n\) denote the braid group on \(n\) strings. \(B_2\) is infinite cyclic and hence is a linear group. It is well-known that \(B_3\) is also a linear group. But it has remained an open problem as to whether any other braid groups are linear.

Function‐driven design of a surrogate interleukin‐2 receptor ligand

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Interleukin (IL)‐2 signaling can be achieved and precisely fine‐tuned through the affinity, distance, and orientation of the heterodimeric receptors with their ligands. We designed a biased IL‐2 surrogate ligand that selectively promotes effector T and natural killer cell activation and differentiation. Interleukin (IL) receptors play a pivotal role in

Clustering Methods for Electricity Consumers: An Empirical Study in Hvaler-Norway [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The development of Smart Grid in Norway in specific and Europe/US in general will shortly lead to the availability of massive amount of fine-grained spatio-temporal consumption data from domestic households.

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Slow 5-cycles and their Special Properties Heard in World Music

open access: yesAnalytical Approaches to World Music
This essay develops and applies a theoretical language for describing a special family of musical cycles that feature five elements at very slow tempos, with the aim of appreciating the listening experiences they afford.

Female participation increases and gender segregation. ESRI WP564, May 2017 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This article examines the impact of a large increase in female participation on occupational segregation. Increases in female participation may decrease occupational segregation if women enter male dominated sectors but may increase segregation if they ...
