Lattice Boltzmann simulations of 3D crystal growth: Numerical schemes for a phase-field model with anti-trapping current

open access: yes, 2016
A lattice-Boltzmann (LB) scheme, based on the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) collision rules is developed for a phase-field model of alloy solidification in order to simulate the growth of dendrites.

Modeling the gas-particle partitioning of secondary organic aerosol: the importance of liquid-liquid phase separation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds between the gas phase and aerosol particles is an important source of secondary organic aerosol (SOA).

Modelling solid tumour growth using the theory of mixtures

open access: yesMathematical Medicine and Biology, 2003
In this paper the theory of mixtures is used to develop a two-phase model of an avascular tumour, which comprises a solid, cellular, phase and a liquid phase. Mass and momentum balances which are used to derive the governing equations are supplemented by constitutive laws that distinguish the two phases and enable the stresses within the tumour to be ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Population viability analysis of Critically Endangered white-rumped vultures Gyps bengalensis

open access: yesEndangered Species Research, 2013
More than a decade has passed since the catastrophic population decline in Gyps species was reported from South Asia, but much uncertainty remains about quantifying their short-term extinction risk.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Linking Tumor Growth Dynamics to Survival in Ipilimumab‐Treated Patients With Advanced Melanoma Using Mixture Tumor Growth Dynamic Modeling

open access: yesCPT: Pharmacometrics & Systems Pharmacology, 2019
Early tumor assessments have been widely used to predict overall survival (OS), with potential application to dose selection and early go/no‐go decisions. Most published tumor dynamic models assume a uniform pattern of tumor growth dynamics (TGDs).

Aggressive prostate cancer is associated with pericyte dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumor‐produced TGF‐β drives pericyte dysfunction in prostate cancer. This dysfunction is characterized by downregulation of some canonical pericyte markers (i.e., DES, CSPG4, and ACTA2) while maintaining the expression of others (i.e., PDGFRB, NOTCH3, and RGS5).

The neural crest‐associated gene ERRFI1 is involved in melanoma progression and resistance toward targeted therapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
ERRFI1, a neural crest (NC)‐associated gene, was upregulated in melanoma and negatively correlated with the expression of melanocytic differentiation markers and the susceptibility of melanoma cells toward BRAF inhibitors (BRAFi). Knocking down ERRFI1 significantly increased the sensitivity of melanoma cells to BRAFi.

Thermodynamically consistent modeling for dissolution/growth of bubbles in an incompressible solvent

open access: yes, 2014
We derive mathematical models of the elementary process of dissolution/growth of bubbles in a liquid under pressure control. The modeling starts with a fully compressible version, both for the liquid and the gas phase so that the entropy principle can be
