Uniform growth rate [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the American Mathematical Society, 2016
In an evolutionary system in which the rules of mutation are local in nature, the number of possible outcomes after $m$ mutations is an exponential function of $m$ but with a rate that depends only on the set of rules and not the size of the original ...

Growth rate for beta-expansions [PDF]

open access: yesMonatshefte für Mathematik, 2009
Let $\beta>1$ and let $m>\be$ be an integer. Each $x\in I_\be:=[0,\frac{m-1}{\beta-1}]$ can be represented in the form \[ x=\sum_{k=1}^\infty \epsilon_k\beta^{-k}, \] where $\epsilon_k\in\{0,1,...,m-1\}$ for all $k$ (a $\beta$-expansion of $x$).

On growth rate and contact homology [PDF]

open access: yesAlgebraic & Geometric Topology, 2014
It is a conjecture of Colin and Honda that the number of Reeb periodic orbits of universally tight contact structures on hyperbolic manifolds grows exponentially with the period, and they speculate further that the growth rate of contact homology is ...

Growth rates of icicles [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 1994
AbstractExperimental and theoretical studies on the growth rate of an icicle were carried out as a function of temperature, water-supply rate and wind speed; the relative humidity was also taken into account. The length of an icicle increases by the downward growth of thin dendritic crystals into the supercooled pendant water drop at the tip, and thus ...

Effect of bacterial growth rate on bacteriophage population growth rate [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, 2017
AbstractIt is important to understand how physiological state of the host influence propagation of bacteriophages (phages), due to the potential higher phage production needs in the future. In our study, we tried to elucidate the effect of bacterial growth rate on adsorption constant (δ), latent period (L), burst size (b), and bacteriophage population ...

Derivatives of the stochastic growth rate [PDF]

open access: yesTheoretical Population Biology, 2011
We consider stochastic matrix models for population driven by random environments which form a Markov chain. The top Lyapunov exponent $a$, which describes the long-term growth rate, depends smoothly on the demographic parameters (represented as matrix entries) and on the parameters that define the stochastic matrix of the driving Markov chain.

Growth rates of amenable groups [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Group Theory, 2005
Let $F_m$ be a free group with $m$ generators and let $R$ be its normal subgroup such that $F_m/R$ projects onto $\zz$. We give a lower bound for the growth rate of the group $F_m/R'$ (where $R'$ is the derived subgroup of $R$) in terms of the length $ = (R)$ of the shortest nontrivial relation in $R$.

Growth Rates and Explosions in Sandpiles [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Statistical Physics, 2009
We study the abelian sandpile growth model, where n particles are added at the origin on a stable background configuration in Z^d. Any site with at least 2d particles then topples by sending one particle to each neighbor. We find that with constant background height h <= 2d-2, the diameter of the set of sites that topple has order n^{1/d}.

Growth rate effects in soft CoFe films [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We report on growth rate effects in sputter-deposited CoFe films prepared using high target utilization sputtering technology (HiTUS). We find that the grain structure of these polycrystalline films is closely related to the growth rate.
