Ecological zonation of benthic foraminifera in the lower Guadiana Estuary (southeastern Portugal) [PDF]

open access: yesMarine Micropaleontology, 2015
The present study analyzes the spatial distribution and seasonal distribution of live benthic foraminiferal communities in the estuary of Guadiana, the fourth largest river on the Iberian Peninsula, and establishes, through statistical analysis, their ...

The impact of Sea level rise in the guadiana estuary

open access: yesJournal of Computational Science, 2020
Understanding the impact of sea level rise on coastal areas is crucial as a large percentage of the population live on the coast. This study uses computational tools to examine how two major consequences of sea level rise: salt intrusion and an increase in water volume affect the hydrodynamics and flooding areas of a major estuary in the Iberian ...

PCB composition in flood material and sediments from the Guadiana River estuary

open access: yesCiencias Marinas, 2005
Two months after moderate river flows, we collected 27 surface sediments from the river-estuarine system and one sediment core from the coastal area.

Ichthyoplankton dynamics in the Guadiana estuary and adjacent coastal area, South-East Portugal [PDF]

open access: yesEstuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 2006
The species composition, abundance and distribution of the ichthyoplankton of the Guadiana estuary and adjacent coastal area were studied in relation to several environmental parameters. Sampling occurred during new moon Spring tides, at the ebb and flood, at nine stations, from March 2002 to February 2003.

Geographical shifts in the successional dynamics of inland dune shrub communities. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2023
In this work, we assess the role of both individualistic species responses to the environment and local processes in the composition and structure of xerophytic scrub communities in the SW Iberian Peninsula by evaluating the geographical consistency of the variations along the compositional gradients between communities dominated by Stauracanthus ...

Dynamics of fortnightly water level variations along a tide-dominated estuary with negligible river discharge [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science, 2021
Observations indicate that the fortnightly fluctuations in the mean amplitude of water level increase in the upstream direction along the lower half of a tide-dominated estuary (the Guadiana Estuary), with negligible river discharge, but remain constant ...

Patterns of Interploidy Admixture in Polyploid Complexes: Insights From Thymus Sect. Mastichina (Lamiaceae). [PDF]

open access: yesMol Ecol
ABSTRACT Understanding gene flow between ploidy levels in polyploid complexes is essential for species delimitation and conservation. This study explores evolutionary dynamics in the polyploid complex Thymus sect. Mastichina (Lamiaceae), comprising three taxa: T. mastichina subsp. mastichina, T. mastichina subsp.

First Record of the Nudibranch Tenellia adspersa (Nordmann, 1845) in Portugal, Associated with the Invasive Hydrozoan Cordylophora caspia (Pallas, 1771)

open access: yesDiversity, 2020
The estuarine nudibranch Tenellia adspersa (Nordmann, 1845) was recorded for the first time in Portugal, while sampling for fouling fauna of artificial structures along the salinity gradient of the Guadiana estuary (SW Iberian Peninsula).

Response of phytoplankton to coastal upwelling: The importance of temporal and spatial scales

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 68, Issue 6, Page 1376-1387, June 2023., 2023
Abstract The Western Iberian Coast (WIC) is characterized by a dynamic coastal upwelling system with interactions between oceanographic features and continental river run‐off. The present study investigates the spatio‐temporal variability in the concentrations of Chlorophyll a (Chl a) and turbidity, and their relationships with physical and other ...

Fish larvae dynamics in temperate estuaries: A review on processes, patterns and factors that determine recruitment

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 24, Issue 3, Page 466-487, May 2023., 2023
Abstract Early life stages of fish (eggs and larvae) are particularly vulnerable with mortality rates of up to 99% recorded for a large number of species. High mortality rates result from the limited swimming ability of larvae preventing them from escaping sub‐optimal environmental conditions, predators or low prey density areas.
