A study of Guanabara Bay sedimentation rates
Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry, 1998Sedimentation rates in Guanabara Bay were determined by applying the210Pb CRS method to sediment cores collected at five different stations. The results showed a pronounced increase from 0.1–0.2 cm·year−1 to 1–2 cm·year−1, in sedimentation rate, over the last 40–50 years.

Multiproxy analysis in contaminated sediments from Niterói Harbour (Guanabara Bay), Brazil
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2022Harbours are located in major urban centres around the world and are of great economic importance to the cities in their surroundings. However, the intense traffic of boats and ships can generate environmental impacts that can directly affect the local biota as well as the population that lives in surrounding areas.

Geomicrobiology of cores from Suruí Mangrove – Guanabara Bay – Brazil
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2010The aim of this work was to quantify the biopolymers associated to esterase enzymes and identify bacterial respiratory activity in four cores collected in Suruí Mangrove, Guanabara Bay - RJ. Biopolymer concentration was 1000 times lower than previously reported in the literature, indicating the need for creating and establishing eutrophication ...

This report card provides a transparent, timely, and geographically detailed assessment of health in Guanabara’s Bay and basin using data from 2013-2015. Guanabara Bay health and Guanabara Bay Basin health are defined as the progress of five water quality indicators toward scientifically-derived thresholds or goals. The indicators are combined into two

Archaeal Communities in a Tropical Estuarine Ecosystem: Guanabara Bay, Brazil
Microbial Ecology, 2007Guanabara Bay is an eutrophic estuarine system located in a humid tropical region surrounded by the second largest metropolitan area of Brazil. This study explores the contrasting environmental chemistry and microbiological parameters that influence the archaeaplankton diversity in a pollution gradient in Guanabara Bay ecosystem.

An environmental overview of Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro
Regional Studies in Marine Science, 2016Abstract As most port areas throughout the world, Guanabara Bay (GB), which hosts the Harbour of Rio de Janeiro (HRJ), is under intense environmental stress. Located in one of the most iconic places of the world, GB environmental status has been the focus of worldwide attention with the imminent 2016 Olympic Games.

Trace metal retention in mangrove ecosystems in Guanabara Bay, SE Brazil
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2002Along contrasting environmental conditions (e.g., degree of trace metal contamination and mangrove forest structural development), sediments of Laguncularia racemosa-dominated mangrove stands in Guanabara Bay (SE Brazil) presented a trend of trace metal accumulation in forms with low potential of remobilization and biotic uptake.

Guanabara Bay Oil Spill 2000, Brazil – Cetacean Response
International Oil Spill Conference Proceedings, 2003ABSTRACT On the 18th January 2000 a broken pipeline owned and operated by the oil company Petrobras spilt some 1300 tonne of bunker fuel into Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro. The wildlife response was divided amongst 2 operational strategies and included – avian fauna and cetaceans.

Hydrocarbonoclastic bacterial communities inhabiting mangrove sediments were characterized by combining molecular and culture-dependent approaches. Surface sediments were collected at two sampling sites in Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and used to inoculate in vitro enrichment cultures containing crude oil to obtain hydrocarbonoclastic ...
