Microplastic contamination in the Guandu River basin: The water supply reservoir of Rio de Janeiro metropolitan region (Southeastern Brazil)

open access: yesCambridge Prisms: Plastics
The present study aimed to elucidate the extent of microplastic (MP) contamination in the Guandu River basin. Samples were collected from surface waters using a Manta trawl at 11 sites in two seasonal periods. MPs abundance was 6.1 ± 4.9 particles m−3 in

Heavy Metals in Drinking Waters from the Paraiba Do Sul – Guandu River System, Rio De Janeiro State, Brazil

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 1987
The main goals of the present work are the determination of the critical metals in the Paraiba do Sul - Guandu River System (PSR-GR), and the analysis of tap waters supplied to local cities as well as the city of Rio de Janeiro, to evaluate the metal pollution.

An emerging coastal wetland management dilemma between mangrove expansion and shorebird conservation. [PDF]

open access: yesConserv Biol, 2022
Abstract Coastal wetlands around the world have been degraded by human activities. Global declines in the extent of important coastal wetlands, including mangroves, salt marshes, and tidal flats, necessitate mitigation and restoration efforts. However, some well‐meaning management actions, particularly mangrove afforestation, can inadvertently cause ...

Spatiotemporal Prediction of Ideal Butterfly Habitats in Kun-Ming's Urban Green Areas: Enabled by Maxent and ArcGIS. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Using Maxent and ArcGIS with 22 SPSS–selected environmental parameters, this study analysed current butterfly distributions in Kunming's urban green spaces, predicted changes under three climate scenarios (1970–2000, 2030s, 2050s) and generated ecological sensitivity data.

Mechanistic and phylogenetic insights into actinobacteria-mediated oestrogen biodegradation in urban estuarine sediments. [PDF]

open access: yesMicrob Biotechnol, 2021
We identified a gene cluster encoding several putative estrogen‐degrading genes (aed; actinobacterial estrogen degradation) in actinobacterium Rhodococcus sp. strain B50. Among them, the aedA and aedB genes involved in estrogenic A‐ring cleavage were identified through gene‐disruption experiments.

Antimicrobial resistance genes and bacterial diversity in sediments of Guandu River, Brazil

open access: yesRevista Ibero-Americana de Ciências Ambientais, 2021
Rivers provide essential water resources for humans. However, appear to be reservoirs of antimicrobial-resistant genes and dispersal routes of resistant pathogens because human activities promptly influence them. Sediments are the most propitious substrates for bacteria survival and can act as an antimicrobial reservoir.

Three new species of Urocleidoides (Monogenoidea: Dactylogyridae) parasitizing characiforms (Actinopterygii: Characiformes) in Tocantins River, states of Tocantins and Maranhão, and new record for U. triangulus in Guandu River, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil [PDF]

open access: yesZoologia (Curitiba), 2021
Three new species of Urocleidoides Mizelle & Price, 1964 are described from the gills of characiform fishes in the Tocantins River and its tributaries. Urocleidoides boulengerellae sp. nov.

A global review of problematic and pathogenic parasites of farmed tilapia

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 15, Issue S1, Page 92-153, February 2023., 2023
Abstract Over the past 80 years, tilapia have been translocated globally for aquaculture; active production is recorded in >124 countries. Of 7 million tonnes of tilapia produced in aquaculture, 79% is from 79 countries outside the natural range of tilapia.

Amplifying the Archive: Methodological Plurality and Geographies of the Black Atlantic

open access: yesAntipode, Volume 54, Issue 4, Page 1297-1319, July 2022., 2022
Abstract First published in 2001, Judith Carney’s Black Rice drew on a complex methodology to argue that enslaved Africans, despite the brutal oppression of bondage, made fundamental intellectual and cultural contributions to agricultural landscapes and economies in the Americas.
