Nanocellulose Alleviates Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy via Gut Microbiota‐Mediated Bile Acid Homeostasis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Nanocellulose, derived from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) through sulfuric acid hydrolysis or mechanical grinding to produce CNC or CNF, was tested in a rat ICP model. Particularly, CNF improved gut microbiota composition, reduced secondary bile acid metabolism, and restored bile acid homeostasis through modulation of the gut–liver axis.

Investigating the impact of oxygen concentration on the assembly of human papillomavirus virus like particles

open access: yesScientific Reports
In HPV vaccine production, the thermal stability, particulate morphology, homogeneity, and immunogenicity of virus-like particles (VLPs) are critical for vaccine efficacy.

Microscale Mapping of Fiber Strain and Damage in Composite Wrinkled Laminates Using Computed Tomography Assisted Wide‐Angle X‐Ray Scattering

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study combines full‐field tomography with diffraction mapping to quantify radial (ε002$\varepsilon _{002}$) and axial (ε100$\varepsilon _{100}$) lattice strain in wrinkled carbon‐fiber specimens for the first time. Radial microstrain gradients (−14.5 µεMPa$\varepsilon \mathrm{MPa}$−1) are found to signal damage‐prone zones ahead of failure, which ...

Variations in seismic velocity distribution along the Ryukyu (Nansei-Shoto) Trench subduction zone at the northwestern end of the Philippine Sea plate

open access: yesEarth, Planets and Space, 2017
The Ryukyu (Nansei-Shoto) island arc-trench system, southwest of Japan, is formed by the subduction of the Philippine Sea (PHS) plate. Among the subduction zones surrounding the Japan Islands, the Ryukyu arc-trench system is unique in that its backarc ...

Endoplasmic Reticulum Geometry Dictates Neuronal Bursting via Calcium Store Refill Rates and Exposes Selective Neuronal Vulnerability

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The ER's continuous tubular network is maintained by ER‐shaping proteins whose mutation or dysregulation contributes to neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we show that ER morphology sets the speed of Ca2+ store replenishment between firing events. Disrupting ER continuity slows intra‐ER Ca2+ redistribution from extracellular refill (SOCE) sites, driving

Adult Sex Ratio as a Demographic Feedback Linking Mating Systems, Parental Care, and Evolution

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Breeding systems are some of the most diverse social behavior, and our team is investigation the evolutionary causes of this diversity. This review summarises our research carried out at the University of Bath. We argue that demographic components of wild populations, especially the adult sex ratio, plays a key role driving breeding system variation ...
