Abstract “Shared soundscapes” is a key concept that allows us to identify the multiplicity of agencies involved in historical sound recordings and their reactivation today. We use the notion to compare two very different Peruvian case studies concerning Asháninka and Nomatsiguenga peoples of the Central Rainforest and Muchik, Quechua, and mestizo ...

Removing invasive giant reed reshapes desert riparian butterfly and bird communities
Giant reed is a prevalent invasive plant in desert riparian ecosystems that threatens wildlife habitat. From 2008 to 2018, under a United States–Mexico partnership, prescribed fire and herbicide applications were used to remove giant reed and promote native revegetation along the Rio Grande–Bravo floodplain in west Texas and Mexico.

Mechanical Behavior and High Formability of Palm Leaf Materials
The remarkable formability and mechanical deformation response of leaf sheath sourced from the areca palm tree are demonstrated. The high formability makes it feasible to produce a range of product shapes from the leaf material by single‐step forming processes, with very low embodied energy.

Abstract Climatic change effects on crop yields are expected to be crop‐ and site specific. Here, Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer models were used to evaluate climatic change effects and mitigation strategies on maize (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] yields in soils of the subtropical and semi‐arid region of Chaco.

We conducted a survey testing for the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) in four lowland sites in Costa Rica to identify local host‐pathogen dynamics and to describe the abiotic environment for this pathogen. We found evidence that lowland study sites exhibit enzootic dynamics with low infection intensity and moderate to high ...

Tropical forest temperature thresholds for gross primary productivity
Abstract Tropical forests are hyper‐diverse and perform critical functions that regulate global climate, yet they are also threatened by rising temperatures. Canopy temperatures depart considerably from air temperatures, sometimes by as much as air temperatures are projected to increase by the end of this century; however, canopy temperatures are ...

Quantification and identification of lightning damage in tropical forests
The frequency and distribution of lightning‐caused tree death remain unknown for most forests. We developed a combined electronic sensor/camera‐based system for the location and characterization of lightning strikes to the forest canopy at the landscape scale in near real time.
