Durability Variation Among Medical Gloves Made from Existing and New Elastomers Poses a Risk to Public Health. [PDF]

open access: yesGlob Chall, 2023
Medical glove durability and mechanical performance varies greatly depending on material, manufacturer, thickness, and function (examination or surgical). This study is intended to alert healthcare workers about the true quality of both existing and new glove varieties so that they can avoid flimsy gloves that easily puncture and expose them to harmful

Biopesticide Activity of Guayule Resin. [PDF]

open access: yesPlants (Basel), 2022
The extensive use of synthetic pesticides has created considerable concern for both human health and the environment, which has prompted the search for safer alternatives, such as the resin of guayule (Parthenium argentatum). Thus, in the present study, we aimed to test the biopesticide activity of crude guayule resin and three derived fractions and ...

Synergistic Potential of Argentatins A and B to Improve 5-Fluorouracil Cytotoxicity in Colorectal Cancer Cell Models. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Cell Mol Med
ABSTRACT Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide and the second most common cause of cancer‐related death in both men and women. Although a number of treatments are available to combat this malignancy, the antimetabolite 5‐fluorouracil has been the cornerstone of therapy since its synthesis in the 1950s.

Rubber biosynthesis drives the biogenesis and development of rubber particles, the rubber-producing organelles. [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Biotechnol J
Summary Rubber particles (RPs) are specialized organelles for the biosynthesis and storage of natural rubber in rubber‐producing plants. However, the mechanisms underlying the biogenesis and development of RPs remain unclear. In this study, two latex‐specific cis‐prenyltransferases (CPTs), TkCPT1 and TkCPT2, were identified in Taraxacum kok‐saghyz ...

Simultaneous Knockout of Tk1-SST and Tk1-FFT via CRISPR/Cas9 Enhances the Natural Rubber Accumulation in Taraxacum kok-saghyz. [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Biotechnol J
ABSTRACT Taraxacum kok‐saghyz (TKS) synthesises natural rubber (NR) and inulin using sucrose as a carbon source. However, molecular mechanisms regulating inulin and NR accumulation remain largely unclear. Here, we report the generation of double‐gene homozygous mutants, 1‐sst1‐fft, by simultaneously knocking out two key genes responsible for inulin ...

The decline of US manufacturing productivity between 1941 and 1948

open access: yesThe Economic History Review, Volume 76, Issue 4, Page 1163-1190, November 2023., 2023
Abstract The view that war benefits potential output has been influential in treatments of US mobilization for the Second World War, where it has been largely premised on the benefits of learning by doing in producing military durables. If the thesis that war benefits aggregate supply is correct, it is indeed within manufacturing that we should most ...

New insights into natural rubber biosynthesis from rubber‐deficient lettuce mutants expressing goldenrod or guayule cis‐prenyltransferase

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 239, Issue 3, Page 1098-1111, August 2023., 2023
Summary Lettuce produces natural rubber (NR) with an average Mw of > 1 million Da in laticifers, similar to NR from rubber trees. As lettuce is an annual, self‐pollinating, and easily transformable plant, it is an excellent model for molecular genetic studies of NR biosynthesis.
