Using MALDI‐FTICR Mass Spectrometry to Enhance ZooMS Identifications of Pleistocene Bone Fragments Showing Variable Collagen Preservation

open access: yesRapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Rationale Recent advances in high‐throughput molecular analyses of collagen peptides, especially ZooMS (Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry), have permitted breakthroughs in the analysis of archaeological material that is highly fragmented, a factor that hinders morphological identification.

Pressure Fluctuations in the S-Shaped Region of a Reversible Pump-Turbine

open access: yesEnergies, 2017
Numerical simulations were performed to investigate pressure fluctuations in the S-shaped region of a pump-turbine model. Analyses focused on pressure fluctuations in the draft tube and in the gap between the guide vanes and runner.

Development and Evaluation of a Low‐Cost, Semi‐Automated Camera Trap for Surveying Bumble Bee Communities

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Camera traps are emerging as a useful tool for noninvasive insect monitoring; however, it remains unclear how to lure diurnal insects to traps, how to detect them upon arrival, and how camera‐based methods compare to conventional sampling. We developed a low‐cost, open‐source camera trap to monitor wild bumble bees in agricultural fields. We found that

Potential for Reducing Emissions by Regulating O2, CO, and H2O in the Recirculation Gas in Iron Ore Sintering

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
This study investigates the potential for reducing emissions during the sintering process by selectively adjusting the O2, CO, and H2O content in the recirculation gas. Adjusting these components positively affects the sintering process, enabling the coke breeze content in the sinter mixture to be reduced.

‘Brave, Armed and Watchful’: Domestic Militarization and Contested Femininities During the Kenyan Emergency

open access: yesGender &History, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article examines the militarization of white settler women during the Kenya Emergency (1952–1960), analyzing how their armed participation disrupted and reconfigured colonial gender norms. Drawing on visual and textual archival and newspaper sources, this article explores representations of settler women as maternal guardians of the ...

Torsional vibrations at guide-vane shaft of pump-turbine model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This article focuses on the problem of guide-vane vibrations of reversible pump-turbines, especially, in the pump mode. These vibrations are transmitted to the guide-vane shaft torque. The guide-vane vibrations are caused by the impeller exit flow, which

Analysis of Rotor-Stator Interaction in Turbine Mode of a Pump-Turbine Model

open access: yesJournal of Applied Fluid Mechanics, 2016
The highest-level fluctuations in large pump-turbines are usually originated from rotor-stator interaction (RSI) in the vaneless region. Hence, the studies of RSI phenomenon and corresponding unsteady effects are significantly important to reduce the ...

Experimental Investigation of Pressure Pulsation Characteristics on Guide Vane Surface of a Low-Specific-Speed Pump–Turbine in Turbine Mode

open access: yesEnergies
To investigate the hydraulic instability mechanisms of low-specific-speed pump–turbines operating in turbine mode, this study experimentally characterized the pressure distribution and pulsation evolution on the guide vanes of a model unit (ns = 28 ...
