Numerous famous luthiers have used low grade salvaged timber and non-wood products to demonstrate that how a guitar is designed to exploit available materials is more important than using prime tonewoods. The material properties of timber are highly variable and are not the single figures frequently quoted in reference books.

Modal analysis of free archtop guitar top plates.

We analyze the modal response of the top plates of archtop guitars using free boundary conditions. Starting from the three-dimensional scan of a real archtop guitar, we build a mesh of its top plate using a non-invasive process.
