TDR (1988-), 1989In I988, just after the beginning of the Chinese new year, in a village high on the plateau of Guizhou in southwestern China, people gather in the center room of a farmer's house. The room is about seven-foot square and is illuminated by candles, the air misty and fragrant with smoking incense sticks.

Guizhou province covers 176 000 km2 of which 72% is karstic. The Guizhou plateau has an altitude of between 1000 m a.s.l. to over 3000 m, but is mostly between 1000–2000 m. The plateau extends into the neighbouring provinces of Yunnan, Hunan, Hebei and Sichuan (Fig. 2).
