Origin of the Gulf of California

Geological Society of America Bulletin, 1961
The probable cumulative Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic right-lateral strike-slip displacement along the San Andreas fault in central California is 350 miles. The San Andreas and the allied faults into which it branches southward trend longitudinally into the Gulf of California, and the seismicity of the region indicates that the fault system follows the ...

Changing climate in the Gulf of California [PDF]

open access: possibleProgress in Oceanography, 2010
We conducted a four year interdisciplinary collaborative project focused in the Gulf of California, the most important fishing region for Mexico. We reviewed published reports, collected and analyzed physical, chemical and ecological data sets, and developed models for the physical (atmosphere and ocean) and ecological components of this large marine ...

Cadmium enrichment in the Gulf of California

Marine Chemistry, 2001
Abstract We are reporting on the first dissolved cadmium (Cd) distributions for the upper 1000-m water column in the Gulf of California for the summer of 1996. The highest surface Cd concentrations were found at the midriff island region (0.21–0.35 nmol l −1 ), while the lowest were detected at the mouth (0.08–0.16 nmol l −1 ).

Thermohaline circulation in the Gulf of California

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1988
The Gulf of California, a narrow, semienclosed sea, is the only evaporative basin of the Pacific Ocean. As a result of evaporative forcing, salinities in the gulf are 1 to 2 ‰ higher than in the adjacent Pacific at the same latitude. This paper examines the thermohaline structure of the gulf and the means by which thermohaline exchange between the ...

On Tsunami Resonance of the Gulf of California

1993
The influence of the local bathymetry and the shape of the contour in the resonant response of the Gulf of California (Mexico) to incident tsunami waves of various approach directions and frequencies is analyzed.

Surface dispersion in the Gulf of California

Progress in Oceanography, 2015
Abstract Surface dispersion is measured in the Gulf of California by means of Argos drifters released along this semi-enclosed, elongated basin. First, basic one-particle statistics (Lagrangian scales, absolute dispersion and diffusion coefficients) are estimated along and across the Gulf.

The Atmosphere Over the Gulf of California

2003
The Gulf of California is also a gulf in the lower atmosphere, delimited by the mountains of Baja California and by the Sierra Madre, open to the eastern tropical Pacific to the south and spreading into the Great American Desert of the southwestern United States.

Primary productivity in the Gulf of California

Marine Biology, 1969
Primary productivity data from 6 cruises in the Gulf of California are summarized. A total of 31 stations with 133 samples was available. The Gulf of California represents a subtropical area with exceptionally high rates of primary productivity. This fact may be accounted for by temporary seasonal upwelling, a wind-mixed water column down to the ...
