Buried trench south of the Gulf of Panama

Geology, 1978
A buried trench south of the Gulf of Panama indicates previous subduction beneath the Isthmus of Panama by lithosphere originating in the Pacific Basin. Sediment accumulation is estimated to be as much as 2.5 km within the trench. The thickness and undisturbed nature of these sediments is compatible with a slowing of subduction.

LATE HOLOCENE PALEOXYGENATION AND PALEOPRODRUCTIVITY OF THE PANAMA GULF [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Paleocenographic conditions in the Panama Bight for the past 4000 years were inferred by using the micropaleontological record from the deep sea core KNR176-2-MC4 (7.27 degrees N, 78.24 degrees W; water depth 2121 m). The epifauna-infauna relationship of deep-sea benthic foraminifera and their diversity gradually increase up-core, which is interpreted ...

Some aspects of upwelling in the Gulf of Panama [PDF]

open access: yes, 1958
ENGLISH: Strong coastal upwelling occurs in the Gulf of Panama regularly each year during the season, from about January through April, when strong northerly winds are blowing offshore. Because of the evident importance of upwelling to the ecology of the Gulf of Panama, we commenced in the fall of 1954 a study of various physical, chemical, and ...

The organic-matter and trace-element distribution of the sediments in the Gulf of Panama

Gff, 1973
Abstract The distributions of Ca, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, P, Zn, organic carbon and nitrogen were determined in the surface sediments of the Gulf of Panama. The relations between these elements are evaluated and the effects of the environmental factors on their geographical distribution are discussed.

Conflict in the sphere of consensus? Critical reporting on the panama invasion and the Gulf War

Political Communication, 1996
The indexing hypothesis holds that when there is consensus in Washington, media coverage supports, and in effect promotes, government policy. This is surprising, as American journalists believe that they are not merely chroniclers of official words and deeds.

Surface Sediments of the Gulf of Panama

SEPM Journal of Sedimentary Research, 1973
ABSTRACT The surface sediments of the Gulf of Panama consist of a relict sand covering the central and outer portion of the shelf, and nearshore recent fine-grained sediments with local accumulations of coarser sediments. Clays, with occasional patches of rocks and pebbles, are typical of the continental slope.

Distribution and Zoogeography of Cheilostomate Bryozoa Along the Pacific Coast of Panama: Comparison Between the Gulf of Panama and Gulf of Chiriquí

2012
Along the Pacific coast of Panama, bryozoans are often a dominant component in epibenthic communities occupying more space than other taxa. Bryozoans dominate on carbonate substrates such as shells, coral rubble and stones around the islands scattered in the Gulf of Panama and Gulf of Chiriqui, shelves situated in very contrasting environmental ...
