Suicidal gunshot wounds were reviewed for a 6 year and 6 month period with respect to age, sex, type of firearm, anatomical location of the entrance wound, alcohol use, location of the event and the presence of a suicide note. There was a total of 64 suicidal gunshot wounds, the majority of which were found in males.

ABSTRACT: A wide variety of injuries are encountered in civilian gunshot wounds with the severity directly related to the amount of kinetic energy imparted on the tissues. A surgeon should be aware of the different ballistic properties of the various firearms and be prepared to treat each patient as an individual.

When the lower one-third of the face is involved, airway patency (1.6% of the cases) and hemorrhage control (1.9% of the cases) are the two most urgent complications to monitor and prevent.

Transcervical gunshot injuries
The American Journal of Surgery, 1994Gunshot injuries across the cervical midline are not addressed in existing trauma algorithms. A retrospective study of 41 patients with transcervical gunshot wounds was undertaken to delineate injury patterns and management principles. Thirty-four of the 41 patients (83%) sustained 52 injuries to major cervical structures.

Neurosurgery, 1991Abstract Experience with 120 patients who incurred a gunshot wound to the head with dural penetration is presented. All of the patients were managed by a standard resuscitation protocol and assigned a clinical grade based on their level of consciousness both at the time of presentation and at 2 to 4 months after injury.

Extremity Gunshot Wound and Gunshot Fracture in Civilian Practice
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1976The civilian gunshot wound is a low velocity injury. Temporary cavitation does not occur in the low velocity wound and damage is confined to the projectile pathway. Extensive debridement is not indicated for this injury. Surgical cleansing is used to convert the open, contaminated wound to a clean, closed wound. Reparative and definitive reconstruction
