AbstractCraniomaxillofacial gunshot injuries, resulting from assault, suicide attempts, and accidental trauma, represent a major public health dilemma in the United States. Due to the extent of injury and resulting osseous and soft tissue loss, facial gunshot wounds pose a unique challenge to the reconstructive surgeon.

A study of gunshot wounds sustained by adolescents revealed 55 cases which required admission to hospital over a five-year period. The most serious injuries occurred in patients who attempted suicide. Two-thirds of the cases resulted from accidental firing of the weapon in a variety of circumstances.

Suicidal gunshot wounds were reviewed for a 6 year and 6 month period with respect to age, sex, type of firearm, anatomical location of the entrance wound, alcohol use, location of the event and the presence of a suicide note. There was a total of 64 suicidal gunshot wounds, the majority of which were found in males.
