Lessons learned from guppies

Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 2006
The ‘birth’ of guppies Poecilia reticulata as a paradigm of evolutionary biology was in the Arima Valley of Trinidad, where Caryl Haskins first described the simple gradient of fish communities found in the ascent up the drainages of the Northern Range Mountains and its consequence for guppies.

Population Control in Guppies

American Midland Naturalist, 1959
Populations of aquatic organisms appear to be self-limiting (Rose, 1957, 1959, 1960). Breder and Coates (1932) have shown for the guppy, Lebistes reticulatus, that 5.5-liter aquaria would support 9 adult fish. This was their final number whether they started with one or 50.

The Autobiography of Adad-guppi

2022
The Adad-guppi inscription is a rare pseudo-autobiography of a woman with political and religious power in the ancient Near East. Two copies of the inscription were discovered: one poorly preserved text excavated in 1907 at the archaeological site of Harran in southern Turkey, and another more complete copy discovered in 1958 as a part of the pavement ...

Extensive training extends numerical abilities of guppies

Animal Cognition, 2014
Recent studies on animal mathematical abilities suggest that all vertebrates show comparable abilities when they are given spontaneous preference tests, such as selecting the larger number of food items, but that mammals and birds generally achieve much better performance than fish when tested with training procedures.

Carcinogenesis studies on guppies.

National Cancer Institute monograph, 1984
Guppies (Lebistes reticulatus) were used as models for the screening of potentially carcinogenic substances. These fish, a simple, readily accessible type, are sensitive toward carcinogens. Using this model, we performed studies on the morphological effects of a few water-soluble chemicals.

At-Home Guppy Population Dynamics

2023
I conducted an at-home study on guppies (Poecilia reticulata) as a follow-up study to a lab in BIOL 306 2022W1 on Population Dynamics that featured the confused flour beetle (Tribolium confusum) and a way to connect my Trinidadian heritage with my academic pursuits as a BIOL Major.
