Water tunnel studies of dynamic wing flap effects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The flow features developing over a two-element NACA 0012 airfoil, with the rear portion serving as a trailing edge flap, were investigated using dye flow visualization in the NPS water tunnel.

Intraoperative radiation therapy with 50 kV x‐rays: A multi‐institutional review

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, Volume 25, Issue 3, March 2024.
Abstract This report covers clinical implementation of a low kV intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) program with the INTRABEAM® System (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany). Based on collective user experience from eight institutions, we discuss best methods of INTRABEAM quality assurance (QA) tests, commissioning measurements, clinical workflow ...

Intracycle RPM control for vertical axis wind turbines

open access: yesWind Energy, Volume 27, Issue 3, Page 202-224, March 2024.
Abstract The wind energy market is currently dominated by horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs); however, vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) are emerging as a design alternative, especially for deep‐water offshore siting due to their low center of gravity, ease of access to drivetrain components, and overall simplicity.

Active Management of Flap-Edge Trailing Vortices [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The vortex hazard produced by large airliners and increasingly larger airliners entering service, combined with projected rapid increases in the demand for air transportation, is expected to act as a major impediment to increased air traffic capacity ...

Water‐Ice Dominated Spectra of Saturn's Rings and Small Moons From JWST

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 129, Issue 3, March 2024.
Abstract JWST measured the infrared spectra of Saturn's rings and several of its small moons (Epimetheus, Pandora, Telesto, and Pallene) as part of Guaranteed Time Observation program 1247. The NIRSpec instrument obtained near‐infrared spectra of the small moons between 0.6 and 5.3 microns, which are all dominated by water‐ice absorption bands.

Numerical Investigation on J‐Shaped Straight‐Bladed Darrieus Vertical Axis Wind Turbines Equipped with Gurney Flaps

open access: yesInternational Journal of Energy Research, Volume 2024, Issue 1, 2024.
This study provides a numerical investigation about J‐shaped straight‐bladed Darrieus vertical axis wind turbines equipped with outboard, inboard, and two‐sided Gurney flap (GF). The performance of the turbines is examined for different GF heights and tip speed ratios (TSRs).

Gurney flap effect using jet induced by plasma actuator

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2015
Lift and drag variations by plasma actuators have been investigated under flow at low Reynolds numbers ranging from 1.7×104 to 6.6×104. Wall-normal-jet type and counter-jet type plasma actuators are attached on the pressure surface near the trailing edge
