Tandem Duplication‐Driven Neofunctionalization of UDP‐Glycosyltransferases Shapes the Diversification of Triterpenoid Saponins in the Cucurbitaceae

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We present a chromosome‐level genome assembly of Siraitia grosvenorii and, through comparative genomics, uncover a conserved UGT73 tandem array driving triterpenoid saponin diversification in Cucurbitaceae. Crystalized SgUGT73AM30 further reveals the regioselectivity mechanism underlying its catalytic activity.

“I’m a Pretty Squid, Mama”: The Ongoing Self-Referential Legacy of Gypsy

open access: yesCritical Stages, 2021
When Squidward Tentacles, the cranky squid co-worker of the ebullient Spongebob Squarepants, proclaims in the middle of the recent SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical, “I’m a pretty squid, mama!” he is doing more than reeling off a quick meta ...

Polarization Dynamics in Ferroelectrics: Insights Enabled by Machine Learning Molecular Dynamics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Machine learning molecular dynamics is presented as a route to capture polarization switching, domain wall kinetics, topological polar textures, and polar mechanical coupling beyond the limits of conventional atomistic methods. This Perspective surveys recent progress and identifies key methodological directions, including long‐range electrostatics ...

Reverse transcriptase sequences from mulberry LTR retrotransposons: characterization analysis

open access: yesOpen Life Sciences, 2017
Copia and Gypsy play important roles in structural, functional and evolutionary dynamics of plant genomes. In this study, a total of 106 and 101, Copia and Gypsy reverse transcriptase (rt) were amplified respectively in the Morus notabilis genome using ...

Extended Anionic Network in Mixed‐Valent Nitridocobaltates(I/II) LnCo2N2 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd)

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents the high‐pressure synthesis of LnCo2N2 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd) with Co in mixed valent states of +I/+II. The compounds demonstrate the stabilization of a nitridocobaltate with extended anionic Co–N layers where Co is threefold coordinated.

“Parasitic Gypsies” versus self-helping Gypsy musicians: Historical facts and moving beyond stereotypes [PDF]

open access: yesMuzikologija
In the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and during the Horthy era in the 1930s, the “wandering Gypsies” and later the inhabitants of Gypsy settlements were often labelled “parasites” by the journalists, officials, and the gendarmes.

Emergent 3D Fermiology and Magnetism in an Intercalated Van der Waals System

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An emergent three‐dimensional electronic state is uncovered in an intercalated van der Waals system. A spin‐polarized intercalant‐host hybridized band crossing the Fermi level provides an itinerant channel for interlayer exchange, highlighting how electronic dispersion governs magnetic dimensionality.
