Block Copolymers: Emerging Building Blocks for Additive Manufacturing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review addresses how block copolymer (BCP) physics and rheology have led to the widespread use of BCPs in advanced additive manufacturing techniques, with particular emphasis on the untapped potential of these nanostructured materials toward achieving multi‐scale architected materials with unique, programmable material properties.

Numerical investigation of gyroid heat exchanger

open access: diamondJournal of Physics: Conference Series
Abstract A novel cylindrical gyroid surface-based tube is designed to investigate fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics numerically. The simulations are carried out using finite volume based CFD software Ansys Fluent. The numerical validation is performed to verify the robustness of the solver and grid independence study are also ...

Nanofabrication of Double-Gyroid Thin Films [PDF]

open access: yesChemistry of Materials, 2007
Nanoporous silica films with the double-gyroid structure offer tremendous technological potential for sensors and separations because of their high surface area and potentially facile transport properties. Further, metals and semiconductors with similar structure open up new opportunities for high-surface-area electrodes, photoelectrochemical devices ...

Bio‐Inspired Molecular Events in Poly(Ionic Liquids)

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Originating from dipolar and polar inter‐ and intra‐chain interactions of the building blocks, the topologies and morphologies of poly(ionic liquids) (PIL) govern their nano‐ and micro‐processibility. Modulating the interactions of cation‐anion pairs with aliphatic dipolar components enables the tunability of properties, facilitated by “bottom‐up ...

Bio‐Inspired Magnetically Tunable Structural Colors from Elliptical Self‐Assembled Block Copolymer Microparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cephalopod‐inspired photonic microparticles with dynamic structural coloration are fabricated via confined self‐assembly of linear block copolymers into ellipsoids containing stacked lamellae. Embedded superparamagnetic nanoparticles enable rapid magnetic alignment, restoring vivid, angle‐dependent color.

Novel Functional Materials via 3D Printing by Vat Photopolymerization

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This Perspective systematically analyzes strategies for incorporating functionalities into 3D‐printed materials via Vat Photopolymerization (VP). It explores the spectrum of achievable functionalities in recently reported novel materials—such as conductive, energy‐storing, biodegradable, stimuli‐responsive, self‐healing, shape‐memory, biomaterials, and

The noncommutative geometry of wire networks from triply periodic surfaces

open access: yes, 2012
We study wire networks that are the complements of triply periodic minimal surfaces. Here we consider the P, D, G surfaces which are exactly the cases in which the corresponding graphs are symmetric and self-dual.

Soft self-assembly of Weyl materials for light and sound [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Soft materials can self-assemble into highly structured phases which replicate at the mesoscopic scale the symmetry of atomic crystals. As such, they offer an unparalleled platform to design mesostructured materials for light and sound.

Generalizations of the gyroid surface

open access: yesJournal de Physique I, 1993
The deformation of Schoen's gyroid — one of the three examples of triply-periodic minimal surfaces possessing cubic symmetry and genus 3 — is discussed. Lower-symmetry variants (similarly of genus 3) are shown to exist, and the one-variable family of rhombohedrally-distorted gyroids is constructed and parametrised exactly via the Weierstrass ...

The Cuttlebone Blueprint for Multifunctional Metamaterials: Design Taxonomy, Functional Decoupling, and Future Horizons

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cuttlebone‐inspired metamaterials exploit a septum‐wall architecture to achieve excellent mechanical and functional properties. This review classifies existing designs into direct biomimetic, honeycomb‐type, and strut‐type architectures, summarizes governing design principles, and presents a decoupled design framework for interpreting multiphysical ...
