The effects of caudocephalad (+Gz) acceleration on the initially curved human spine

open access: closedComputers in Biology and Medicine, 1974
Abstract A beam-column model of the human spine subjected to a caudocephalad (+Gz) acceleration is analyzed by the finite-difference numerical technique. It was shown that the previous analytical treatment of this problem by the assumed-mode method is valid only for either very low levels of the acceleration pulse or for very early times in the ...

Nonlinear parametric rolling in regular waves—a general procedure for the analytical approximation of the GZ curve and its use in time domain simulations

open access: closedOcean Engineering, 2005
A general procedure for the analytical approximation of the restoring arm in regular longitudinal waves is presented. The aim of the approximation is to obtain an analytical and accurate means for substituting the look-up table method in time domain simulations of realistic nonlinear parametric roll.

Probability of Capsizing in Beam Seas with Piecewise Linear Stochastic GZ Curve

open access: closed, 2011
The probability of capsizing for a dynamical system with time-varying piecewise linear stiffness is presented. The simplest case is considered, in which only the angle of the maximum of the restoring curve is changing. These changes are assumed to be dependent on wave excitation; such a system can be considered as a primitive model of a ship in beam ...

An Experimental Study on Characteristics of Rolling in Head Waves for a Vessel with Nonlinear GZ-curve

open access: closed, 2019
In this study, the characteristics of rolling in head waves for a vessel with strong nonlinear GZ-curve, which includes parametric rolling, are investigated. Rolling is measured for systematically changed wave length and height under the same forward speed, which is service speed in heavy weather.
