How Passive Acoustic and Traditional Monitoring Estimate Bird Diversity Across Habitats

We compared traditional bird counts (PC) with passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) in a heterogeneous Alpine landscape. PAM recorded twice as many species, with a strong correlation between species richness and the bird counts (rs = 0.71); however, there were significant differences depending on habitat type.

One Size Does Not Fit All—Ignoring Spatial Variation in Occupancy and Detectability Underestimates the Required Number of Camera Trap Sites

Camera trap occupancy studies often rely on simple rules of thumb that assume constant occupancy and detection across sites. Using simulations, we show that accurate occupancy estimates require 10–40 sites with no spatial variation, 20–120 with simple variation and 40–600 with complex spatial structures.
