The present status of investigations concerning active control of the H-mode is discussed, including density control for steady H-mode operation, control of heat flux to lower the divertor heat load, and control of the transport barrier for further improvement of confinement and MHD stability.

Nuclear Fusion, 2003
H-modes are routinely obtained in the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) and have become a standard operational scenario. L–H transitions triggered by NBI heating have been obtained over a wide parameter range in Ip, Bt, and e in either lower-single-null (LSN) or double-null (DN) diverted discharges.

H-mode confinement in tokamaks
Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 1987The paper reviews present understanding of H-mode physics by summarising relevant experimental observations and discussing possible interpretation. The most important features of the H-mode are a minimum threshold edge temperature (threshold input power) required to achieve the H-mode; the bifurcation nature of the H-transition with instantaneous ...

Model of the H-mode in tokamaks
Nuclear Fusion, 1989The paper presents a theoretical model of the H-mode in tokamaks which is based on the bifurcation of the radial electric field at the plasma edge. The electric field is determined by the balance of the non-ambipolar fluxes of ions and electrons at the edge.

On the width of a pedestal in the H-mode
Nuclear Fusion, 2016Abstract The thickness of the transport barrier at the plasma edge is discussed, by analyzing the structure of the interface region between the turbulent L-mode region and the region where the transport is strongly-stabilized by the electric field. The effect of this localized radial electric field is prescribed.

Survey of H-mode transition and confinement from ASDEX Upgrade 'H-mode standard shot'
Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 2002The H-mode standard shot of ASDEX Upgrade provides an overview of the long term evolution of machine conditions and scatter of H-mode power threshold and confinement. This type-I ELMy H-mode is run every day of plasma operation since 1999. After a long opening for in-vessel work, the power threshold drops rapidly by about 50% over 100 discharges and ...

Abstract We propose that the main fucntion of the divertor configuration in the H-mode mechnanism is temporary storage of the effluxing particles for a time longer than the edge energy confinement time. This temporary storage enables the edge temperature to transiently increase above a threshold temperature necessary for the H-mode transition.

Status of a Stellarator/Heliotron H‐mode Database
Contributions to Plasma Physics, 2010AbstractThis paper describes the purpose and the structure of the database of confinement improvement modes in helical devices under activities of the International Stellarator/Heliotron Profile Database (ISHPDB). Data are being collected from 4 devices: CHS, LHD, TJ‐II and W7‐AS.

Reactor compatibility of the H-mode
Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 1996H-mode operation presents challenges for ITER and for reactor application in the areas of performance, accessibility, sustainability and divertor compatibility. Some issues are more severe for ITER, while others are more problematic for an economic fusion reactor producing 3 MW of neutron flux to its walls.
