Razvoj brzih mikroprocesora te efikasnih algoritama za kodiranje video signala omogućio je ekspanziju aplikacija s multimedijalnim sadržajima. Novi standard H.264 za kodiranje videa osim efikasne kompresije, osigurava i zaštitu kod prijenosa radijskim mrežama, a isto tako i robusnost na zagušenja i gubitke paketa kod prijenosa IP mrežama.
