Predictive values for different cancers and inflammatory bowel disease of 6 common abdominal symptoms among more than 1.9 million primary care patients in the UK: A cohort study.

open access: yesPLoS Medicine, 2021
BackgroundThe diagnostic assessment of abdominal symptoms in primary care presents a challenge. Evidence is needed about the positive predictive values (PPVs) of abdominal symptoms for different cancers and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).Methods and ...

The Impact of Tenapanor on Body Composition and Blood Pressure in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients: A Pilot Study

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Instruction Tenapanor potentially affects fluid volume and blood pressure. This study explored its effects on these parameters in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Methods We conducted a single‐arm, prospective observational study that enrolled 10 patients on PD with hyperphosphatemia who were newly initiated on tenapanor.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Protocol for Minute Calisthenics: a randomized controlled study of a daily, habit-based, bodyweight resistance training program

open access: yesBMC Public Health, 2020
Background Resistance-training (RT) provides significant health benefits. However, roughly 3/4 of adults in the United States do not meet current Physical Activity Guidelines in this regard.

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Metastatic niche shaped by host factors influences disseminated cancer cell fate

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Metastasis is shaped not only by cancer cells but also by the environments they encounter. This review explores how factors such as aging, diet, the microbiome, lifestyle, and environmental exposures remodel organ‐specific niches in the lung, liver, bone, and brain, influencing where metastatic cells survive, remain dormant, or grow, and ultimately ...

Exploratory study of the impact of perceived reward on habit formation

open access: yesBMC Psychology, 2018
Background Habits (learned automatic responses to contextual cues) are considered important in sustaining health behaviour change. While habit formation is promoted by repeating behaviour in a stable context, little is known about what other variables ...

Determinants of undergraduate bioscience engagement: Validating attendance barriers and classroom spatial behaviour across institutions

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Student engagement extends beyond simple attendance. Across 891 bioscience students from three universities, attendance behaviour was associated mainly with structural influences, whereas classroom spatial behaviour reflected affective and sensory factors.

Endocannabinoid signaling is critical for habit formation

open access: yesFrontiers in Integrative Neuroscience, 2007
Extended training can induce a shift in behavioral control from goal-directed actions, which are governed by action-outcome contingencies and sensitive to change in the expected value of the outcome, to habits which are less dependent on action-outcome ...

A nationwide student survey on biochemistry learning resources in Italy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We conducted a survey among Italian university students to investigate their preferred study materials for biochemistry. We then analyzed the collected data to identify these materials. This information may be valuable to the Biochemistry educational community. The graphical abstract was created with Claude (Opus 5.5; Anthropic, 2026).
