Cropland protection policies are implemented to guarantee food security, especially the cropland balance policy in China. Although these policies alleviate the quantitative loss of cropland, they cause a serious decline in habitat quality and reduce ...

Habitat Quality in a Hostile River Corridor
Ecology, 1999Stream fish often occur in tributaries at high densities, and dispersal between tributaries must occur through the intervening river, whose attributes may differ from those of the tributaries. In Trinidad, tributaries of the Guanapo River have high densities of a killifish, Rivulus hartii, but the river also contains a strong piscivore that may affect ...

Naturalness-based habitat quality of the Hungarian (semi-)natural habitats
Acta Botanica Hungarica, 2008Effective conservation of (semi-)natural habitats needs knowledge on the naturalness, the actual quality of a habitat or vegetation patch. Nevertheless, there are only a few studies have been published in this topic so far. During the META project, between 2002–2005, we have surveyed the semi-natural vegetation of Hungary and assessed the naturalness ...

We explore a spatially implicit patch-occupancy model of a population on a landscape with continuous-valued heterogeneous habitat quality, primarily considering the case where the habitat quality of a site affects the mortality rate but not the fecundity of individuals at that site.

A review of approaches for classifying benthic habitats and evaluating habitat quality
Journal of Environmental Management, 2004We have assessed the current state of knowledge relative to methods used in assessing sub-tidal benthic habitat quality and the classification of benthic habitats. While our main focus is on marine habitat, we extensively draw on knowledge gained in freshwater systems where benthic assessment procedures are at an advanced stage of maturity.

Approaches to classifying benthic habitat quality
Marine Policy, 2008Abstract Implementing ecosystem-based management requires methods of assessing the quality of habitats to deliver the high-level objective of achieving healthy ecosystems. ‘Habitat’ has been interpreted in different ways and this has confused the debate over which attributes constitute ‘quality’. Three definitions of quality for habitats are advanced:

An increase in human population generally exerts pressure on natural habitats and leads to a decline in biodiversity resources. As a proxy for biodiversity study, an evaluation of habitat quality (HQ) change caused by land use/land cover (LULC) and ...

Abstract The projects reviewed in this chapter take several approaches to the subject of habitat quality, but all focus on food intake rate as the measure of interest. Because of this focus, using feather growth rate was an attractive option. We begin with a project relating territory size to nutritional condition.

Habitat preservation and restoration: Do homebuyers have preferences for quality habitat?
Ecological Economics, 2009Abstract This research examines homebuyers' preferences for nearby riparian habitat, an important issue because quality riparian habitat competes for water resources with other activities in semi-arid regions and because federal and local governments allocate significant resources to riparian habitat preservation and restoration plans.

Predicting Habitat Quality for Grassland Birds Using Density-Habitat Correlations
The Journal of Wildlife Management, 1986Predictive models relating densities of 5 grassland bird species to habitat variables were developed and tested using stepwise multiple regression and principal components regression. For most species the models gave poor quantitative estimates. Because there were distinct habitat differences among the study sites used to generate and the study sites ...
