Linking community structure and climate vulnerability in desert plant assemblages of southern California

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Desert plant assemblages in southern California provide an opportunity to link patterns of community structure with climate‐driven vulnerability in a rapidly changing environment. California sustains an exceptionally diverse flora of approximately 4300 plant species, with 31% identified as endemic.

European bison (Bison bonasus) in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (Ukraine) and prospects for its revival [PDF]

open access: yesПраці Теріологічної школи, 2017
In 2012–2016 a European bison adult bull was observed (by camera traps) in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ, Ukraine), west of Tovstyi Lis village. This is the first record of wild bison in Kyiv Polissya for over 300 years.

Breeding of the Pygmy Owl (Glaucidium passerinum) in the broadleaved forests in lower altitudes [PDF]

open access: yesTichodroma
The distribution of the Eurasian Pygmy Owl (Glaucidium passerinum) in Central Europe is mainly associated with conifers and altitudes above 450 masl. In 2023 and 2024, two nests were found at two sites in lower altitudes (264 and 410 masl).

Reproductive stages in lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) occur earlier with increasing temperature

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Climate change is altering the timing of many plant phenological events, yet most studies focus on flowering, with less attention given to later reproductive stages such as fruit development and ripening. Vaccinium angustifolium (lowbush blueberry) is an important perennial berry species that may be sensitive to these changes.

Success of coastal sage scrub restoration is influenced by local adaptations of shrub species

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Restoring plant communities is increasingly challenging with climate change. While practitioners have traditionally used local seed sources, many are recommending assisted migration, possibly from more extreme environments such as inland rather than coastal environments, for restoration.

Exposure to heat waves and drought improves subsequent leaf heat tolerance for five oak species in southern California

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Given the threats of climate change, we investigated the impact of high temperatures separately and in combination with reduced soil water on leaf heat tolerance for five oaks (Fagaceae) with overlapping ranges in southern California, USA: Quercus agrifolia and Q. chrysolepis (evergreen species), Q. douglasii and Q.

Seasonal Fluctuations of Plastochromanol‐8 and α‐Tocopherol Amounts in the Leaves of Cecropia Trees

open access: yesJournal of the American Oil Chemists' Society, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Plastochromanol‐8 (PC‐8) is a homologue of γ‐tocotrienol with a longer side chain (eight instead of three isoprene units) and therefore also a representative of the tocochromanol (vitamin E) group. PC‐8 has been determined in various plants and seeds, with Cecropia sp. leaves showing unusually high levels.
