The HadCM3 contribution to PlioMIP phase 2 [PDF]

open access: yesClimate of the Past, 2019
We present the UK's input into the Pliocene Model Intercomparison Project phase 2 (PlioMIP2) using the Hadley Centre Climate Model version 3 (HadCM3). The 400 ppm CO2 Pliocene experiment has a mean annual surface air temperature that is 2.9

The simulation of Antarctic sea ice in the Hadley Centre Climate Model (HadCM3) [PDF]

open access: bronzeAnnals of Glaciology, 2001
AbstractAn assessment is presented of the extent and variability of Antarctic sea ice in the non-flux-corrected version of the Hadley Centre’s coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model (HadCM3). The results are based on a 100 year segment of a long control run of the model with the sea ice being compared to ice extents and concentrations ...

Climate Projections for South America: RegCM3 Driven by HadCM3 and ECHAM5 [PDF]

open access: goldAdvances in Meteorology, 2014
This study shows climate projections of air temperature and precipitation over South America (SA) from the Regional Climate Model version 3 (RegCM3) nested in ECHAM5 and HadCM3 global models. The projections consider the A1B scenario from Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and three time-slices: present (1960–1990), near- (2010–2040), and

ENSO in the Mid-Holocene according to CSM and HadCM3 [PDF]

open access: bronzeJournal of Climate, 2013
Abstract The offline linearized ocean–atmosphere model (LOAM), which was developed to quantify the impact of the climatological mean state on the variability of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), is used to illuminate why ENSO changed between the modern-day and early/mid-Holocene simulations in two climate modeling studies using ...

The Climate of the MIS-13 Interglacial according to HadCM3 [PDF]

open access: bronzeJournal of Climate, 2013
The climate of the Marine Isotopic Stage 13 (MIS-13) is explored in the fully coupled atmosphere–ocean general circulation model the Hadley Centre Coupled Model, version 3 (HadCM3). It is found that the strong insolation forcing at the time imposed a strengthened land–ocean thermal contrast, resulting in an intensified summer monsoon over Asia.

Twin experiments with the equivalent weights particle filter and HadCM3 [PDF]

open access: hybridQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 2015
This article investigates the use of a particle filter for data assimilation with a full‐scale coupled ocean–atmosphere general circulation model. Synthetic twin experiments are performed to assess the performance of the equivalent weights filter in such a high‐dimensional system.

Properties of El Niño–Southern Oscillation in Different Equilibrium Climates with HadCM3

open access: hybridJournal of Climate, 2006
Abstract The ENSO variability in three long, stable, steady-state integrations of the Third Hadley Centre Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere GCM (HadCM3) is analyzed, relevant to climatic conditions of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), of the preindustrial period [control (CTL)], and of a greenhouse stabilization scenario (GHS) at 4 times the ...

North Atlantic Subtropical Mode Waters and Ocean Memory in HadCM3

open access: hybridJournal of Climate, 2006
Abstract A study of the formation and propagation of volume anomalies in North Atlantic Mode Waters is presented, based on 100 yr of monthly mean fields taken from the control run of the Third Hadley Centre Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere GCM (HadCM3). Analysis of the temporal and spatial variability in the thickness between pairs of isothermal

Application of HadCM3@Bristolv1.0 simulations of paleoclimate as forcing for an ice-sheet model, ANICE2.1: set-up and benchmark experiments [PDF]

open access: goldGeoscientific Model Development, 2018
Abstract. Fully coupled ice-sheet–climate modelling over 10 000–100 000-year timescales at high spatial and temporal resolution remains beyond the capability of current computational systems. Forcing an ice-sheet model with precalculated output from a general circulation model (GCM) offers a middle ground, balancing the need to accurately capture both ...
