Sensing Hadley cell with space-borne lidar

Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer, 2014
Abstract Some recent studies reported expansion of the Earth׳s tropical regime in the past few decades. The poleward expansion of the Hadley cell is a strong indication of the warming of the globe. The extent of Hadley cell also has very important implications to the climate of dry subtropical regions because of the prevalence of precipitation in the

On the Seasonality of the Hadley Cell

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2003
Abstract The annual march of the climatological mean meridional circulations (MMCs) in the NCEP–NCAR reanalyses is dominated by two components of roughly comparable mean-squared amplitude: 1) a seasonally invariant pair of “Hadley cells” with rising motion centered near and just to the north of the equator and subsidence in the subtropics, and 2) a ...

Topographic Hadley cells

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1994
When a rotating fluid over sloping topography is heated from below and/or cooled from above, horizontal temperature gradients develop which drive convection cells aligned with isobaths. We refer to these cells as topographic Hadley cells. Laboratory experiments reveal that sinking occurs in small cyclonic vortices situated in relatively shallow regions.

Seasonal Sensitivity of the Hadley Cell and Cross-Hemispheric Responses to Diabatic Heating in an Idealized GCM [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2018
The seasonal sensitivity of the Hadley cell to localized diabatic forcing is studied using a dry idealized atmospheric general circulation model. Sensitivities are broadly consistent with Hadley cell responses in observations and climate models to ENSO ...

Deconstructing the Hadley cell heat transport

Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 2012
AbstractThe mechanisms responsible for poleward atmospheric heat transport at low latitudes are examined in the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Re‐Analysis (ERA‐40) dataset. Deep meridional overturning circulations are found in regions experiencing frequent convection (i.e.
