Solsticial Hadley Cell ascending edge theory from supercriticality [PDF]
AbstractHow far the Hadley circulation’s ascending branch extends into the summer hemisphere is a fundamental but incompletely understood characteristic of Earth’s climate. Here, we present a predictive, analytical theory for this ascending edge latitude based on the extent of supercritical forcing.

A modelling study of the Bjerknes compensation in the meridional heat transport in a freshening ocean [PDF]
The compensation between the meridional heat transports in the atmosphere and ocean is studied through a coupled model's water-hosing experiments. It is found that the atmospheric heat transport (AHT) change compensates the oceanic heat transport (

Eddy Influences on the Hadley Circulation
Variations in the width and strength of the Hadley cells are associated with many radiative, thermodynamic, and dynamical forcings. The physical mechanisms driving these responses remain unclear, in part because of the interactive nature of eddy‐mean ...

Lagrangian decomposition of the Hadley and Ferrel cells [PDF]
The meridional overturning circulation of the atmosphere between 45°S and 45°N is decomposed using simulated 3D Lagrangian trajectories for calculating the Lagrangian overturning streamfunctions. This permits an analysis of meridional mass transports which otherwise cancel in time‐averaged zonal‐mean Eulerian streamfunctions.

The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) is coherently linked to climate variations over many parts of the globe. Despite recent achievements, the mechanism by which the AMO influences regional precipitation over South America is not well understood ...

The tropical Atlantic surface wind divergence belt and its effect on clouds [PDF]
A well-defined surface wind divergence (SWD) belt with distinct cloud properties forms over the equatorial Atlantic during the boreal summer months. This belt separates the deep convective clouds of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) from the ...

On the summer hemisphere Hadley cell [PDF]
AbstractIn the extreme seasons the winter hemisphere Hadley cell dominates the entire zonally averaged mean meridional circulation by extending well into the summer hemisphere, and the summer hemisphere Hadley cell practically disappears. The hypothesis that this apparent disappearance is due to the process of zonal averaging, and that a summer ...

Analytical Estimation of the Widths of Hadley Cells in the Solar System [PDF]
Abstract Analytical descriptions of the angular width of Earth’s Hadley cell show it to be related to the square root of the product of the tropospheric thickness and buoyancy frequency, and to the inverse square root of the angular velocity and planetary radius. Here, the applicability of this formulation is examined for other planetary

The impact of the rotation rate on an aquaplanet's radiant energy budget: insights from experiments varying the Coriolis parameter [PDF]
We investigate the effect of changes in the Coriolis force caused by changes in the rotation rate on the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiant energy budget of an aquaplanet general circulation model with prescribed sea surface temperatures.
