Haematocrit: a predictor of cardiovascular mortality ?
Journal of Internal Medicine, 1993Abstract.Objectives. The main purpose of the study was to assess a possible association between haematocrit (Hct) and long‐term cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality.Design. An extensive examination programme was carried out in 2014 men, defined as apparently healthy, during the period 1972 to 1975, including Hct measurements in a 25% random subsample.

It is possible to increase haemoglobin (Hb) and haematocrit (Ht) to non-physiological values by injecting recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO). Although this treatment may result in a better performance of athletes, it may also cause a health risk. To prevent doping with rhEPO, the Union Cycliste Internationale has decided to exclude male cyclists ...

Haematocrit in metabolic syndrome
Diabetic Medicine, 2003In this paper are described normal and insulin resistant subjects, correlating the haematocrit value with M-index during euglycaemic hyperinsulinaemic clamp. The haematocrit value is related negatively with the M-value. We conclude that insulin resistance is a possible factor in determinating the blood viscosity in relation with the red cells/plasma ...

Contribution of the Haematocrit to the Bleeding Time
Haemostasis, 2009Bleeding time, platelet count and haematocrit were performed in 64 normal, anaemic and polycythaemic subjects with normal renal function and platelet counts over 100 B× 109/l. There was a significant inverse correlation between the bleeding time and haematocrit (r = -0.47) and an inverse correlation of the haematocrit and platelet count (r = -0.46). We

Re‐assessment of the Reliability of the Haematocrit
British Journal of Haematology, 1972Summary. Significant quantities of plasma are trapped between the centrifuged red cells in the microhaematocrit. This produces a falsely high haematocrit and mean corpuscular volume, and a falsely low mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration. Trapped plasma accounts for approximately 3% of the normal red‐cell column. Slightly higher values are found

High Altitude, Haematocrit and Age
Nature, 1972ALTHOUGH the relationship between haematocrit and altitude was established by Hurtado et al.1 in the Andes of Peru, none has been established between haematocrit and the age of permanent residents at different altitudes. Reviewing data collected from healthy volunteers living in Morococha, 4,540 m above sea level, we found that there was always a ...

This review was undertaken, concerning within-subject biological variation and seasonal variation of haematocrit in normal healthy adults and athletes, to find the limits for natural, intra-individual variation in haematocrit values. The terminology and calculations followed well defined theories, from the field of laboratory medicine, about biological

Hyperoxic ventilation at the critical haematocrit
Resuscitation, 2003During normovolaemic haemodilution arterial O(2)-content decreases exponentially. Nevertheless, tissue oxygenation is first maintained initially by increased organ perfusion and O(2)-extraction. As soon as these compensatory mechanisms are exhausted, myocardial ischaemia and tissue hypoxia occur at an individual 'critical' haematocrit (Hct) value. This

Haematocrit distribution in rabbit tenuissimus muscle
Acta Physiologica Scandinavica, 1988Low values of mean capillary haematocrit have been reported in many tissues including skeletal muscle. The present study was undertaken to analyse haematocrit distribution in the transverse and terminal arterioles, capillaries and venules of the rabbit tenuissimus muscle preparation. Tube haematocrit, i.e.

THE PROGNOSTIC VALUE OF HAEMATOCRIT IN ACUTE STROKE
Age and Ageing, 1988One hundred and twenty-two consecutive patients admitted with acute stroke in a carotid distribution had venous blood taken for haematocrit (Hct), haemoglobin (Hb), white cell count (WCC) and urea estimations. Patients were followed for 12 weeks to determine the influence of haematocrit upon fatality.
