Randomized preclinical study of machine perfusion in vascularized composite allografts

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), EarlyView., 2020
This study was designed to identify the optimum machine perfusion parameters for preservation of limbs before transplantation, and determine whether this was better than cold storage. Normothermic machine perfusion at a pressure of 70 mmHg (NMP‐70) provided superior preservation to cold storage after transplantation.

The impact of cottonseed meal levels and enzyme mixture supplementation on breast meat colour and blood parameters in quail [PDF]

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Zootecnia
The effects of diets containing various levels (0, 10, and 20%) of cottonseed meal (CSM) and enzyme mixture (0.1%) on quail serum iron, haemoglobin, and haematocrit values and colour values of breast meat were investigated.

Use of Dried Blood Spot Specimens to Monitor Patients with Inherited Metabolic Disorders

open access: yesInternational Journal of Neonatal Screening, 2020
Monitoring of patients with inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) using dried blood spot (DBS) specimens has been routinely used since the inception of newborn screening (NBS) for phenylketonuria in the 1960s.

Normal‐Appearing White Matter Injury Mediates Chronic Deep Venous Hypoxia and Disease Progression in Multiple Sclerosis

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To explore how cerebral hypoxia and Normal‐Appearing White Matter (NAWM) integrity affect MS lesion burden and clinical course. Methods Seventy‐nine MS patients, including 13 clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) patients and 66 relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients, and 44 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited from ...

Developing and Evaluating a Laboratory‐Based Frailty Index for the Prediction of Long‐Term Health Outcomes in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective We aimed to construct and evaluate the first laboratory‐based frailty index (FI‐Lab) for predicting adverse outcomes in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and to compare its predictive ability to that of an existing clinical FI. Methods We used data from a single‐center prospective cohort of adult patients with SLE whose baseline visit ...

Declining haematocrit with increasing age in a population of male zebra finches Taeniopygia guttata

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology, 2022
Whole organismal declines in metabolic performance due to ageing are known to occur in virtually all higher vertebrates, the causes of such declines, however, are not fully understood. In mammals, haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit and red blood cell

Determinants of Body Mass Index in Early Systemic Sclerosis: Implications for Nutritional Risk Stratification

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Gastrointestinal (GI) involvement can lead to malnutrition in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Body mass index (BMI) remains the most widely used marker to screen nutritional status. We aimed to identify predictors of lower BMI in patients with SSc. Methods Patients with SSc from a prospective US cohort meeting 2013 American College of

Relationships among tissues, biofluids, and otolith selenium concentrations in wild female burbot (Lota lota)

open access: yesIntegrated Environmental Assessment and Management, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract In the Lake Koocanusa‐Kootenai River system (Montana, USA and British Columbia, Canada), selenium (Se) contamination has become an international concern and is suspected to contribute to the observed burbot (Lota lota) population collapse. Due to our limited ability to sample burbot in Lake Koocanusa for monitoring studies, we used a reference
