Some fern gametophytes can explore new habitats that differ from their sporophyte counterparts, and when they do this, they tend to follow specific axes of climate related to aridity (increased or decreased). Moreover, we found that this ecological niche expansion may be driven by ecophysiological adaptations to abiotic environments.
