2014Antonio Gallonio devoted a large part of his life to the collection and reworking of hagiographical texts. This chapter deals with the most obvious aspect of Gallonio's work: saints belonging to the past; texts about saints were by definition historical texts.

Hagiography is a literary genre that tells stories about saints, and already by the start of the Merovingian period it was more than 300 years old. Writers mostly saw the maturity of hagiography as an asset and further refined its rhetorical and aesthetic features.
