Hailfall: the relationship between radar-derived hail kinetic energy and hail damage to buildings

Atmospheric Research, 2002
Relationships between radar-derived hail kinetic energy and hail damage to residential and agricultural buildings are presented for nine hail cells that occurred over the Swiss Mittelland (1992–1999). Hail kinetic energy (EKINPIX) was calculated from C-band Doppler radar Constant Altitude Plan Position Indicators (CAPPIs) at a height of 1.5 km and ...

Hail Damage to Typical Aircraft Surfaces

Journal of Aircraft, 1972
Severe structural damage can occur when aircraft collide with hailstones. Consequently, methods of predicting hail damage to airplane surfaces are needed by the aircraft designer. This paper describes an analytical method of predicting the dent depth and final deformed shape for simple structural components impacted by hailstones.

THE EFFECT OF HAIL DAMAGE ON BARLEY

Canadian Journal of Plant Science, 1979
After a severe hailstorm at Fort Ellis, Montana, an experienced hail insurance adjuster estimated 90–100% damage in replicated yield plots of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). After harvest, grain yield losses for all 66 entries in the nursery were found to range from 26 to 84%.

Fine-grained multi-factor hail damage modelling

2015 Conference on Technologies and Applications of Artificial Intelligence (TAAI), 2015
A fine-grained multi-factor estimation of crop-hail damage is required to progress from manual inspection of crops post-event to automated assessment and accurate forecasting of the expected impact on agricultural areas. Such automated processes will enable more accurate claims processing, improve customer satisfaction, and reduce insurance losses ...

Hail Fundamentals and General Hail-Strike Damage Assessment Methodology

2017
This chapter provides information on the formation and characteristics of hailstones, hailstorms, and the importance of these characteristics when performing hail damage assessments. It explores the relationships between the size of hail and the dents they produce on metal surfaces. The chapter provides a methodology for the determination of functional/

Hail Damage Impacts on Corn Productivity: A Review

Crop Science, 2019
Hail influence on corn (Zea mays L.) yield depends on defoliation timing and severity. Complete defoliation during early vegetative stages can have minimum yield effects if plants’ growing point is not affected but can generate some delays in the planting to flowering period. Low‐severity defoliations after V10 can reduce yield up to 30%.

Hail Damage to Upland Cotton1

Agronomy Journal, 1974
AbstractThere has been very little scientific data published on the effect of hail damage on Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) because of the nature of the problem and difficulty in setting up an appropriate, experimentally sound investigation.A hailstorm on June 26, 1971 made it possible to collect data on the effect of differential damage to ...
