Hair dye poisoning - Walking on a tight rope

Hair dye poisoning which was uncommon, is now raising an alarm in the field of toxicology. It leads to acute angioedema causing airway compromise, thus making it life threatening. It also leads to acute renal failure and multi organ damage. Failure in prompt recognition and timely management may lead to death.

Acute poisoning from hair dye.

A series of 18 cases of acute hair dye (paraphenylenediamine) poisoning were reported. The characteristic features of swollen face and the chocolate brown colour of the urine were diagnostic. Asphyxia was found to be the major early challenge of life.

Context: Hair dyes are widely used and very popular xenobiotics. Most of these products contain paraphenylenediamine (PPD) that can cause methemoglobinemia. We here report a case of severe methemoglobinemia that we treated using large amounts of methylene blue. Case details: A 30-year-old man visited a regional hospital with cyanosis.

Myocardial damage in hair dye poisoning--an uncommon presentation.
