Shape of a Ponytail and the Statistical Physics of Hair Fiber Bundles [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2012
A general continuum theory for the distribution of hairs in a bundle is developed, treating individual fibers as elastic filaments with random intrinsic curvatures. Applying this formalism to the iconic problem of the ponytail, the combined effects of bending elasticity, gravity, and orientational disorder are recast as a differential equation for the ...

Physicochemical Aspects of the Performance of Hair-Conditioning Formulations

open access: yesCosmetics, 2020
Most of the currently used products for repairing and conditioning hair rely on the deposition of complex formulations, based on mixtures involving macromolecules and surfactants, onto the surface of hair fibers. This leads to the partial covering of the

Hybrid Amyloid–Boron Nitride Aerogels for Lightweight Sound Insulation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Amyloid fibrils template the mild formation of boron nitride–rich hybrid aerogels with hierarchical porosity, enhanced BN‐like ordering, and fibril‐reinforced mechanics. These ultralight materials combine thermal stability with strong sound absorption and transmission loss, offering a sustainable bio‐assisted route toward lightweight acoustic shields ...

Elastomeric 3D‐Printed Microenvironments Enable Nanonewton Force Measurements in Healthy and Diseased Human Pluripotent Stem Cell‐Derived Neuroepithelial Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We present elastomeric three‐dimensional (3D) microstructures fabricated via two‐photon polymerization (2PP) and post‐processed through wet etching, for quantifying nanonewton (nN)‐scale forces applied by healthy and diseased neural cells. The mechanically characterized free‐standing beam architectures enable measurement of traction forces of ...
