ABSTRACT Large congenital melanocytic nevi/nevus (LCMN) are caused by genetic events that activate the mitogen‐activated protein kinase (MAPK) and extracellular signal‐regulated kinase (ERK) pathway. Individuals with LCMN are prone to developing aggressive melanomas during childhood.

Summary Permanent tracheostomy is sometimes required in horses with severe and irreversible obstructive upper airway conditions. Abnormal respiratory noise and altered vocalisation may be of concern to owners and its influence on mare‐foal recognition and bonding should be considered.
