Embryology of the hair follicle

Early Human Development, 1991
A study of hair follicle development has enabled us to differentiate four stages by relating them to corresponding gestation ages. Stage I of the hair bud is characterized by an epiblastic proliferation penetrating the subjacent mesenchyma at the extremity of which mesenchymal cells accumulate.

Hair follicle predetermination

Journal of Cell Science, 2001
Recent genetic and molecular studies of hair follicle (HF) biology have provided substantial insight; however, the molecular data, including expression patterns, cannot be properly appreciated without an understanding of the basic cellular rearrangements and interactions that underpin HF cyclic transformations.

Hair-follicle nevus

The American Journal of Dermatopathology, 1984
A case of a 5-year-old child with a rare nevus of a hair follicle is reported. Histologically it was characterized by many hair follicles within the dermis at the same level of maturation. This nevus must be differentiated from other hamartomas of hair follicles and from Becker's nevus.

Multifunctional Zn doped hollow mesoporous silica/polycaprolactone electrospun membranes with enhanced hair follicle regeneration and antibacterial activity for wound healing.

Nanoscale, 2019
Due to the complexity of the skin tissue structure, the regeneration of the entire skin, including skin appendages such as hair follicles, is a big challenge.

Hair Follicle Regeneration by Transplantation of a Bioengineered Hair Follicle Germ

2016
Hair follicle morphogenesis is first induced by epithelial-mesenchymal interactions in the developing embryo. In the hair follicle, various stem-cell populations are maintained in specialized niches to promote repetitive hair follicle-morphogenesis, which is observed in the variable lower region of the hair follicle as a postnatal hair cycle.

WHOLE HAIR FOLLICLE CULTURE

Dermatologic Clinics, 1996
In this article the authors have reviewed the historical background behind the organ culture of whole hair follicles. The methods developed by the authors and others for the isolation and whole organ maintenance of hair follicles from both human and other species are described.

Estrogens and the hair follicle

JDDG: Journal der Deutschen Dermatologischen Gesellschaft, 2004
SummaryWhile it is undisputed that estrogens (17β‐estradiol, E2) are mainly involved in skin physiology and operate as potent hair growth modulators, our knowledge about the estrogen target cells in skin and exact signaling pathways is still very limited.

Dendritic polyglycerol and N-isopropylacrylamide based thermoresponsive nanogels as smart carriers for controlled delivery of drugs through the hair follicle.

Nanoscale, 2017
Nanoparticles with a size of several hundred nanometers can effectively penetrate into the hair follicles and may serve as depots for controlled drug delivery.

The secret life of the hair follicle

Trends in Genetics, 1992
The mammalian hair follicle is a treasure waiting to be discovered by more molecular geneticists. How can a tiny cluster of apparently uniform epithelial cells, adjacent to a tiny cluster of uniform mesenchymal cells, give rise to five or six concentric cylinders, each of which is composed of cells of a distinctive type that synthesize their own ...

Localized hair follicle hamartoma

Journal of Cutaneous Pathology, 1993
A 4‐year‐old male presented with an indurated papular plaque on his right nasolabial fold. The lesion, present since the child was a few months of age, progressively extended in a band‐like fashion up to the upper lip. Microscopically, there was almost complete replacement of the hair follicles by trichoepithelioma‐like epithelial proliferations ...
