A case of a 5-year-old child with a rare nevus of a hair follicle is reported. Histologically it was characterized by many hair follicles within the dermis at the same level of maturation. This nevus must be differentiated from other hamartomas of hair follicles and from Becker's nevus.

2016Hair follicle morphogenesis is first induced by epithelial-mesenchymal interactions in the developing embryo. In the hair follicle, various stem-cell populations are maintained in specialized niches to promote repetitive hair follicle-morphogenesis, which is observed in the variable lower region of the hair follicle as a postnatal hair cycle.

In the absence of Dicer-dependent miRNA production, hair follicles evaginate rather than invaginate, revealing an unexpected role for miRNAs in regulating hair follicle morphogenesis.
