Hairy Cell Leukemia Variant

A 59-year-old man presented with lymphocytosis with huge splenomegaly. The abnormal lymphocytes had a high nucleoplasm:cytoplasm ratio, a prominent nucleolus and hairy cytoplasmic projections. Familial Hairy Cell Leukemia

Familial hairy cell leukemia (HCL) occurs rarely, and HCL occurring in association with other hematologic malignancies is even rarer. We describe two cases of familial HCL syndromes: a mother and son with HCL, and a HCL patient whose aunt developed Hodgkin's Disease (HD). This is the first reported familial association of HCL with HD.

[Hairy cell leukemia].

Chronical course, splenomegaly and pancytopenia are characteristic for hairy cell leukemia. The main feature are so-called hairy cells in peripheral blood. This cells were investigated by cytological, cytochemical, histological and electron microscopical methods. Special cytoplasmic inculsions seem to be specific for this cell type.

Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is a well-defined entity. Proliferation with hair cells, morphological aspects of hairy cells are easy to identify. Hairy cells express markers CD11c, CD25, CD103 and CD123. In 80% of cases, a BRAFV600E mutation is highlighted.

Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is a chronic lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by splenomegaly, pancytopenia, and bone marrow infiltration. HCL is quite responsive to new purine analogs and long-lasting remissions may be achieved.
