Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and inorganic elements in predatory bird livers and eggs 2007 to 2009: a Predatory Bird Monitoring Scheme (PBMS) Report [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The Predatory Bird Monitoring Scheme (PBMS; http://pbms.ceh.ac.uk/) is the umbrella project that encompasses the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology’s National Capability contaminant monitoring and surveillance work on avian predators.

Apparent Survival of Territorial Golden Eagles Using Non‐Invasive Genetic Profiling

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
In a novel study for the species, DNA was extracted from moulted feathers over 4 years involving 21% of the Scottish population of territorial golden eagles, and individuals' genetic profiles were analysed for apparent survival rates. Results showed sexual differences but not between two sub‐populations; very few cases of breeding dispersal were ...

Evaluating the demographic impacts of the highly pathogenic avian influenza panzootic

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
Our findings demonstrate that the HPAIV panzootic can cause rapid and long‐lasting impacts on the dynamics of long‐lived species. This raises major concerns for the conservation and long‐term viability of the many severely affected long‐lived species worldwide.

Forage over fear: Assessing drivers of site use in response to shooting disturbance in a managed goose species

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
Our results demonstrate that to be effective in stimulating redistribution, an understanding of the drivers of site use is crucial for shooting‐based disturbance regimes. We emphasise the importance of providing refuges to encourage site use and highlight the importance of considering the spatio‐temporal coordination of shooting disturbance to ...

Successful stocking of wild European perch in a reestablished lake with lasting effect over 10 years

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, Volume 34, Issue 1, January 2026.
Biological manipulation of fish compositions to enhance top‐down control of trophic webs is a common method for improving water and ecological quality in shallow eutrophic lakes, but it often fails. As an alternative to manually thinning unfavored fish stocks, piscivorous fish species can be released to suppress the recruitment of cyprinid fish ...

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A (H5N1) Caused Mass Death Among Black‐Legged Kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) in Norway, 2023

open access: yesTransboundary and Emerging Diseases, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
In 2023, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) heavily affected gulls in Europe. In July, a mass mortality event was reported in the black‐legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) breeding colony at Ekkerøy in Northern Norway. The cause was confirmed to be infection with the HPAI H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b virus, genotype EA‐2022‐BB. We describe the outbreak in

Global analysis of threat status reveals higher extinction risk in tropical than in temperate bird sister species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Given increasing pressures upon biodiversity, identification of species’ traits related to elevated extinction risk is useful for more efficient allocation of limited resources for nature conservation.
