Time scale evolution of avipoxviruses [PDF]

open access: yes, 1952
Avipoxviruses are divided into three clades: canarypox-like viruses, fowlpox-like viruses, and psittacinepox-like viruses. Several molecular clock and demographic models available in the BEAST package were compared on three avipoxvirus genes (P4b ...

Natality and calf mortality of the Northern Alaska Peninsula and Southern Alaska Peninsula caribou herds

open access: yesRangifer, 2003
We studied natality in the Northern Alaska Peninsula (NAP) and Southern Alaska Peninsula (SAP) caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) herds during 1996-1999, and mortality and weights of calves during 1998 and 1999- Natality was lower in the NAP than the SAP

A win–win between farmers and an apex predator: investigating the relationship between bald eagles and dairy farms

open access: yesEcosphere, 2023
Human–wildlife conflicts on farms and ranches are common and well‐documented, particularly with apex predators. Predation of livestock, for example, can result in serious economic burdens for farmers and can become threats to wildlife populations as ...

An overview of existing raptor contaminant monitoring activities in Europe [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Under a Creative Commons license.-- et al.Biomonitoring using raptors as sentinels can provide early warning of the potential impacts of contaminants on humans and the environment and also a means of tracking the success of associated mitigation measures.

Predator effects link ecological communities: kelp created by sea otters provides an unexpected subsidy to bald eagles

open access: yesEcosphere, 2018
Ecological communities are best studied at the landscape level, where linkages among communities are considered. Such linkages are often driven by increases in primary production caused by apex predators limiting herbivores.

Structure and resilience of bald eagle roost networks

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2018
The recognition that communal roosts are important elements within the life cycle of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) led to their protection under the “disturb” clause of the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

Blood lead levels in Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) in Southeast Alaska by gender and capture location. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Research into the effects of lead on bald eagles has demonstrated that lead levels are higher in bald eagles than other birds at lower trophic levels (Burger and Gochfield 2009).

Feathers as a tool to assess mercury contamination in gentoo penguins: Variations at the individual level [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Feathers have been widely used to assess mercury contamination in birds as they reflect metal concentrations accumulated between successive moult periods: they are also easy to sample and have minimum impact on the study birds.

Sarcocystis sp.-Associated Meningoencephalitis in a Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus Leucocephalus) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation, 2007
Protozoal meningoencephalitis is uncommon in raptors. An adult female bald eagle ( Haliaeetus leucocephalus) was euthanized after several months of treatment for progressive neurologic signs. The predominant histologic lesion was lymphoplasmacytic and histiocytic meningoencephalitis involving the cerebrum and cerebellum.

Comparing autumn duck use of intensely managed wetlands in Michigan using a novel approach

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Camera traps, a relatively novel method for assessing waterfowl use of wetlands, show ducks in southeastern Michigan are influenced by hunting disturbance, vegetation type, season progression, and diel period. Abstract Socioeconomic value derived from duck hunting has contributed to autumn habitat use becoming a particular focus for the natural ...
