Halophiles

Halophiles are extremophilic salt-loving microorganisms that can survive in an extremely high level of salinity (10-30% NaCl). They belong to all three groups (i.e., bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes). Halophiles tolerate high salt concentration due to unique cellular adaptations like salt-in strategy, compatible solute strategy, and enzyme adaptations.

Halophilic archaea is a member of the Halobacteriacea family, the only family in the Halobacteriales order. Most Halophilic archaea require 1.5M NaCl both to grow and retain the structural integrity of the cells. The proteins of these organisms have thus been adapted to be active and stable in the hypersaline condition.

Halophilic Vibrio Sepsis

We have described a patient with fulminant sepsis and bullous skin lesions due to L + Vibrio. The histologic features of these lesions as well as the rapid onset of refractory shock and complete heart block at least suggest that potent bacterial toxins are involved in the pathogenesis of disease caused by this "unnamed lactose-positive marine Vibrio."
