The hazards of hammers

Injury, 1987
Fifty-five patients who had received an intraocular foreign body as a result of using a hammer were identified during a 4-year period. Of these, 36 had suffered the injury while at work and 19 while undertaking do-it-yourself activities at home. None had been wearing suitable protection.

Hammer acceleration due to thrower and hammer movement patterns

Sports Biomechanics, 2007
Ground reaction force and wire tensile force were measured during test throws by three hammer throwers: the Asian record holder, who had a personal best of 83.47 m at the time of the investigation, and two university athletes, with personal bests of 59.95 m and 46.30 m respectively. They were filmed using three high-speed video cameras (250Hz).

Between the hammer and the anvil: An unusual power hammer fatality

Journal of Forensic Sciences
Abstract Power hammers are mechanised forging devices that constitute a pivotal part of steel manufacturing. Power hammer‐associated injuries are a rare occurrence. We report a noteworthy case of a 52‐year‐old man who sustained a high‐energy penetrating injury while working with a power (counterblow) hammer.
