Hamster health care

open access: yesBMJ, 2000
Across the globe doctors are miserable because they feel like hamsters on a treadmill. They must run faster just to stand still. In underdoctored Britain they must see ever more patients, fill in more forms, and sit on more committees just to keep the NHS afloat.

Hamster Model of Leptospirosis [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Protocols in Microbiology, 2006
AbstractThis unit describes the techniques involved in the hamster model of leptospirosis. Hamsters are exquisitely susceptible to infection with pathogenic Leptospira species. The LD50 of virulent Leptospiral strains by intraperitoneal inoculation of 3‐ to 4‐week‐old hamsters is as low as a single organism.

Amyloidosis in Hamsters with Leishmaniasis.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1946
SummaryForty-six days after successful inoculation of L. donovani into hamsters, there appeared edema associated with amyloidosis. There was marked anasarca at 60 and 77 days after infection with extensive deposition of amyloid in the glomeruli and the adrenal cortex. The hypoalbuminemia, which coincided with the edema and a proteinuria, is believed to

Effect of Thymectomy on Hamsters.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1965
SummaryThe effect of thymectomy at various ages on Syrian hamsters has been investigated. Forty-four per cent of the animals thymectomized and sham-operated at less than 24 hours did not survive the first 3 post-operative weeks. The remaining animals, however, appeared as healthy and survived as long as their control littermates. A mild wasting disease

The Taste of Polycose in Hamsters [PDF]

open access: yesChemical Senses, 1998
Hamsters show a preference for Polycose, a mixture of starch-derived glucose polymers, that is as strong as their preference for sucrose. However, in the hamster, taste aversions to Polycose may be less easily acquired than taste aversions to sucrose and the qualitative aspects of Polycose are unknown in this species.

Other reports of such tumors in this species are reviewed and the literature relative to hamster ganglioneuromas presented. In addition, the possible genesis of origin from adult ganglion cells upon the action of carcinogenic ...
