Role of Entomophily and Artificial Pollination in Enhancing Quality and Yield of Seed Onion (Allium cepa L.) in Indian Himalayas

open access: yesJournal of Apicultural Science, 2022
Onion (Allium cepa L.) is a highly cross pollinated crop that needs insect pollination (entomophily) for optimum seed set. In the present study, more than 120 insect species were noted to visit onion flowers, out of which fifty-nine species were ...

Three options are better than two: compensatory nature of different pollination modes in Salix caprea L.

open access: yesJournal of Pollination Ecology, 2021
Mixed pollination systems have been reported for many angiosperms. Here, we report on a dioecious willow, Salix caprea L., which employs three pollination modes, namely pollination by wind, nocturnal moths, and diurnal bees.

Asymbiotic seed germination of Phalenopsis Blume orchids after hand pollination

open access: yesActa agriculturae Slovenica, 2012
Seven commercial hybrids of Phalaenopsis were included in an asymbiotic germination experiment. Plants differed in size and color of flowers and number of inflorescences and flowers. A total of 109 flowers were included of which 60 or 55% were cross-pollinated and reciprocally pollinated. Seed capsules developed on 46 (76.7%) fertilized flowers.
