Grip Strength and Hand Dominance: Challenging the 10% Rule

The American Journal of Occupational Therapy, 1989
Abstract The purpose of this study was to test the utility of the 10% rule in hand rehabilitation. The 10% rule states that the dominant hand possesses a 10% greater grip strength than the nondominant hand. This rule has been used for many years to assist therapists in setting strength goals for patients with injured hands.

Dynamometer Measurements of Hand-Grip Strength Predict Multiple Outcomes

Perceptual and Motor Skills, 2001

Hand Dominance and Grip Strength of Older Asian Adults

Perceptual and Motor Skills, 2010
Hand dominance in a group of Asian adults 60 to 89 years old was examined. Participants were independently living in the community; free of pain, injury, and disease of the upper limbs; and had no restrictions on use of upper extremities in daily activities.
